Maria Bakalova Was Given A Huge Digital Monologue for Borat 2
Actress of Borat 2, Maria Bakalova, was given several pages long graphic monologue by the film’s writer.
Filmmaker Jason Woliner’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a mockumentary comedy movie written by wight writers including Peter Baynham, Jena Friedman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Lee Kern, Dan Swimer, Anthony Hines, Dan Mazer, and Erica Rivinoja.
The film is a controversial movie that stars Cohen as a fictional TV personality and Kazakhstani journalist, Borat Sagdiyev. And Bakalova as Borat’s teenage daughter Tutar. The movie revolves around these two father-daughter characters where Borat offered his daughter Tutar as a bride to Mike Pence (Vice President) during a press meet and presidential election 2020. Most of the film is unscripted and includes real-life interaction with Americans who think Borat is a foreigner with no understanding of American culture.
The first film of the franchise was released in 2006, and it did fantastic at the box office. Borat collected a gross of $262 million against a budget of $18 million. Actor Cohen received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. And the controversial film got a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The second film of the franchise was filmed secretly and screened after a few weeks Cohen spotted while driving around Los Angeles in Borat’s get-up. Borat 2 was released by Amazon Studios as a video on demand on Prime Video on 23 October 2020.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm received tonnes of appreciations from critics as well as from the audience. It has become the second most-streamed movie of 2020. It got an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 249 reviews with an average rating of 7.29. And scored 68 on Metacritic with the remark of “generally favorable.” The producers of the film were planning to delay the release date to release the film in theatres.
In contrast, Cohen was clear that he wanted to release the film before the presidential election. The decision seems much wise one as the film did an amazing performance. The actors also received praise for their incredible performances. Cohen is a known actor and has a different fanbase for his work. Still, his stardom could not overshadow the presence of the newcomer, Maria Bakalova. Borat 2 is her first entry into the industry, and Bakalova left her irreplaceable mark on the audience. Fans are even speculating that the actress might acquire her place in the Oscars nominations.
Bakalova is a Bulgarian actress, majored in drama at the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts. Film critic, Justin Chang, described her acting skills in the movie Borat 2 as terrific and praised her character’s journey. The talented actress signed up with the Creative Artists Agency in November 2020. In an interview, the Bulgarian actress shared that she thought it was a scam when she got a call from the audition, and it has something to do with the human trafficking squad. She, anyway, sent the self-tape audition. And the next moment, she was selected for the role and was rehearsing next to Cohen.
The 24-year actress deserves all kinds of praise as she has faced many challenges while filming the movie. And the young actress boldly faced the challenges and came over it, which might intimidate even the most experienced actors. During an interview with Indiewire, Bakalova shared one such challenge when the writers gave her several page graphic monologues to discuss her first experience of masturbation in front of Women Republicans gathering. English is not the actress’s first language, so Bakolova was intimidated by performing the important scene without her confidant Cohen and the monologue’s huge length. The actress said, “I was freaking out…” She added that she was still understanding the character and was not completely sure who Tutar was. She was terrified of the big monologue and that Sacha was not there. Her English wasn’t fluent; she did not even know what most of the words meant.
However, the actor Cohen helped the young actress and filled her with courage on the FaceTime call. He said, “I see you are nervous. Use it…” Cohen encouraged Bakalova to explore her nervousness in her act, and that helped the actress.
The actress also shared that many amazing genius ideas were cut down from the final film at the editing table. The writers of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm had to change the plot because it depended on the presidential campaign and pandemic. The team launched Bakalova to overnight fame to enter as a fake reporter to gain entry to the White House; to do that, the team made the unknown actress famous with a Hollywood agency CAA, which indicates a more high-profile role in American films.
The long scenes, especially with monologues, seem much fun to watch, but those are the most difficult parts an actor can perform. And comedy monologues are the most difficult one as the actor must deliver the correct message with the right sense of humor with accurate comedic timing. Although the actress did a great job in the film and the character of Tutar was certainly not for the faint-hearted. Bakalova boldly performed the role with her unique ability to hold the emotional arc in the scene.
Bakalova’s character of Tutar will be a topic to discuss for months until the Academy Awards.
